about

I sat down with Jonathan Byrd to write this song, both of us looking for a different take on the usual holiday music. We’re both big fans of scoring a deal, especially at a thrift store. I’ve even dug instruments out of the trash! So out came a story about a family who maybe didn’t have all the advantages that money brings, but they were happy, they were generous, they were together. They found all their presents secondhand and celebrated with leftovers on the day after Christmas.

Song exclusively released on Bandcamp, with a free download to my Patrons of course. Check out the video on YouTube- every Patron's name is listed in the credits! :)

The Day After Christmas
© Byrd/Gardner 2022

On Christmas Day, Mama waited tables.
Daddy got time and a half.
Didn’t have a tree. Little sister and me
didn’t have gifts to unwrap.

We were too poor to go the store and spend all our money that way.
It wasn’t that bad, with the love that we had
We just had to wait one more day...

(Cause) The day after Christmas, we’d go to the dump.
Make all our treasures out of everybody’s junk.
I got an old record player- I guess they didn’t want to fix it.
I knew just what to do. I was groovin’ by noon, the day after Christmas.

Found a bunch of comics they had us all laughing,
some drill bits for Mama, and paints for my Daddy,
a nearly full set of porcelain dishes.
What good luck, we filled up the truck, the day after Christmas

My sister and I almost fought for the prize
of a pair of red roller skates
Then she said “you take the left, I’ll take the right”
Put our arms ‘round each other and held on tight
And we roller derbied down the lane

Late in the evening, we’d call on the neighbors.
gave them re-gifted presents, wrapped in recycled paper
They fed us leftovers. Mmm the ham was delicious.
Santa came late, but he filled up our plates on the day after Christmas.

If I ever get rich, I’m sure gonna miss,
The day after Christmas
… jingle all the way to the dump
